Bagpipes at a funeral.......

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together.

When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Apparently I'm still lost....

Family Legacy - Part 1

I want to share with you the faithfulness of the Lord to us. I will be doing a series of blogs of stories written for our family, Called Family Legacy.

Jerry (Jay) and I were newly married. He was working in Eureka for McMurray Roofing, but it was wet and he couldn't work every day. We had eaten our last crackers with peanut butter and honey for dinner the night before. Steve wasn't born yet. This was February 1955.

It was my birthday, and I sat at the window looking out, and wondering if we can eat grass. Animals do! I felt responsible to have something ready for dinner. Maybe I could shoot a bird or something. I wish I was back home in Evansville. Why did I ever leave home? This is a hard day to be having a birthday.

When Jerry came home from work. McMurray's had sent meat and other food from their freezer home with them. That was wonderful. Then, Mom & Dad invited us over for dinner.

It was a good birthday after all. This was the first time the Lord showed us He will provide for us.

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.

Hellloooo,............just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It's been a year! I told him.

There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

What’s Real?

I hate to find out I have been deceived, taken for a ride, swindled.

I like to read Marni in the Saturday paper. She talks about interior decorating. Last week she went to a tile show. Modern photography has made “fake” look so real, it is almost impossible to tell the difference.

I have observed that in every arena of life, lawyers, merchants, and thieves have perfected deception. This has happened in my lifetime; a few short years. We have to be so careful to not be fooled.

I think of all the religions out there. Most of them are really good people. They all believe they will go to heaven when they die. Who is right? Some believe they are all right. What we believe can have eternal consequences if we find we are wrong. But by then, it’s too late.

The Bible, which I believe to be absolute truth, says that there is no other way to God but through Jesus, who gave His life for our life. We were condemned because God can’t tolerate sin. Jesus took our punishment for us.(John 3:16). There is no other way to see God. Check out in your Bible Acts 4:12 and John 14:6 . Galatians 1:8 says even if an angel tells you there is another way, don’t believe them.

I pray we will all not be deceived, but can tell the real from fake.
